Could Morgan Wallen be to blame for injuries in a football game? That is the allegation from some fans. In late September, Wallen packed Neyland Stadium—home of the Tennessee Volunteers football team—for a concert that attracted over 156,000 attendees across two nights. This massive turnout meant that thousands of concertgoers were on the floor and, inevitably, the field. It’s not uncommon for concerts to leave playing surfaces in poor condition; for instance, Luke Bryan faced backlash earlier this year after his concert damaged the outfield at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves.

This time around, the situation seems a bit more serious. The playing surface for the Volunteers and the Florida Gators appeared to be in excellent condition, even described as perfect. This pristine appearance was due to the entire field being replaced following Wallen's concert. Even the Tennessee Volunteers' assistant athletic director remarked on how great the field looked. However, just over two weeks after the new grass was laid, two players suffered non-contact injuries, leading to the end of their seasons: Tennessee linebacker Kennan Pili and Florida Gators quarterback Graham Mertz.

For Mertz, this unfortunate turn of events marks the end of his college career, as he will not have eligibility next year. Unsurprisingly, Florida fans are enraged, directing their frustration towards the Volunteers. While there’s been no official word from Tennessee regarding concerns about the field's condition, many observers feel this is unfortunate luck, with fans eager to find someone to blame. This rivalry between Florida and Tennessee certainly doesn't need any additional fuel to stoke the flames of animosity!
