Conway Twitty's former home is at risk of demolition, according to a new report. The late country icon’s estate, located in the affluent Nashville suburb of Hendersonville, faces potential destruction due to plans for a new development in the area. This situation has sparked significant concern among fans and preservationists who treasure the legacy of the legendary musician.
Twitty's estate in Hendersonville, Tennessee, was not only a home but also the historic site of Twitty City, a popular tourist attraction until his death in 1993. Following his passing, the property was acquired by the Trinity Broadcasting Network, which has utilized it for various production purposes, including filming the show Huckabee. However, the estate suffered extensive damage from a tornado in December, raising doubts about its structural integrity and future.
The country legend's residence was already at risk prior to the tornado, as it is an aging building poorly suited for its current use. Plans from TBN include razing the existing structure to pave the way for new assisted living and independent living facilities, along with an expanded studio. This proposed construction has raised questions about the preservation of Twitty's legacy in the area.
After assessing the tornado damage, Frank Amedia, president of TBN's real estate division, stated that the building is beyond saving, noting that the "whole building was twisted." With approximately 100 staff members displaced due to the unsafe conditions of the building, some are working remotely while others are trying to maintain productivity in a compromised environment.
Amedia has expressed intentions to save the iconic "Hello Darlin'" sign from the property, hoping to honor Twitty's legacy in the new studio. He believes that restoring a sense of identity related to Twitty on the property would be a fitting tribute. "You can’t see the Twitty bird; the brick wall is there, but most people don’t know what it is," he shared, emphasizing the need for a revival of Twitty's presence in the area.
