The Mavericks announced the departure of founding member Robert Reynolds in October, which has raised significant discussions regarding addiction within the music industry. In a recent interview, the band revealed that Reynolds was fired due to an ongoing addiction to opiates, a situation that has deeply affected both the group and its fans. Lead singer Raul Malo expressed his concerns, stating, "This is the worst thing I've ever seen as far as addiction. He's far gone."

The Grammy-winning country group, known for their unique blend of country, rock, and Latin music, disbanded in 1999 but made a triumphant reunion in 2013. They celebrated their 25th anniversary with a new album called 'In Time', and announced plans to release another studio effort titled 'Mono' in February 2015. However, the band members admitted that Reynolds was barely involved in the new album due to his struggles with substance abuse.

According to drummer Paul Deakin, the problems with Reynolds were evident from the start of their reunion. He had confronted Reynolds about his addiction, which was met with denial at first. "When he finally admitted it, I said, 'I'm not going to sign these [record] contracts until you go into rehab.' On three separate occasions, we put him in different forms of rehab over the past three years," Deakin shared.
