If you have never been to a Camping World megastore, you quite possibly have noticed one on the side of the highway at some point. They are known for their large one-of-a-kind buildings, and their giant American flags that fly out front of each location. However, a recent incident in California has raised eyebrows and sparked discussions about patriotism and local regulations.
In a move that seems backward, a Camping World location in California is under fire for something that most would agree it shouldn't be: flying an American flag. This iconic symbol of freedom and unity has become the focal point of a legal dispute that sheds light on the balance between local ordinances and national pride.
Camping World RV Sales in San Joaquin County, California—like many of the company's other 200+ locations—flies a giant American flag over its grounds. But in April, the county ordered the dealership to remove the flag, citing safety reasons and a lack of permission. This unexpected development has left many questioning how flying a flag could pose any danger at all.
Why Was the American Flag Ordered to Be Taken Down?
The county stated that Camping World’s flagpole was installed without a building permit or planning approval, leading them to engage with the code enforcement division. The officials expressed concerns regarding the flagpole's proximity to property lines and the highway, raising the question: how can something that symbolizes the nation be viewed as hazardous?
Despite initially complying with the order, the situation escalated. After months of negotiation with the county, Camping World CEO Marcus Lemonis decided to reinstate the flag on August 12. He emphasized that if there were genuine safety concerns affecting air traffic or public safety, they would not have taken such action. His decision reflects not only a business choice but a deep-rooted sense of national pride.
Lemonis also highlighted the significance of the flag to many employees and customers, many of whom are veterans. This underscores the emotional connection many feel towards the American flag, making the county's request even more contentious.
What Are the Implications of This Dispute?
The county responded, clarifying that the issue was strictly about the height of the flagpole. They are collaborating with Camping World to issue the necessary permit for the flagpole to remain in compliance with state and county laws. This situation invites a broader discussion about how local regulations can sometimes clash with patriotic expressions.
The moral of the story is clear: don't mess with Old Glory. As articulated by country music star Toby Keith, there can be significant backlash when cultural symbols are challenged—especially those as revered as the American flag. This incident serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in navigating local laws while honoring national symbols.
