Reba McEntire Remembers the Plane Crash That Killed 8 Band Members

Reba McEntire recently took a moment to honor her friends who lost their lives in a tragic plane crash 32 years ago. This somber remembrance holds deep significance for the country music star, as she dedicates her current tour to the eight talented bandmates and crew members who perished on March 16, 1991. Through her heartfelt message on social media, McEntire reminded her followers of the importance of friendship in the music industry. "They were eight leading professionals in the music industry. But, most of all, they were my friends," she shared on Instagram.

The fateful day was marked by a plane traveling from San Diego to Indiana, which crashed when the tip of the wing hit a rock on the side of Otay Mountain. McEntire, along with her husband Narvel and her stylist, stayed at the hotel due to her illness caused by bronchitis. Tragically, those lost included Kirk Cappello, Michael Thomas, Tony Saputo, Paula Kaye Evans, Terry Jackson, Joey Cigainero, Chris Austin, and tour manager Jim Hammon.

McEntire reflected on the strength that music brings to those left behind. "Their love for music and the stage gives us all the strength to go on," she added, a sentiment echoed in a touching video that showcased the group performing together. Every year, McEntire honors the memory of her friends, and in 2012, she candidly discussed the crash and its aftermath during an interview with Oprah Winfrey. "When we were notified, Narvel went and met with our pilot, and he told us what had happened," she recalled.

Less than six weeks after this heartbreaking event, McEntire bravely returned to the stage to accept the ACM Award for Female Vocalist of the Year. Through tears, she paid tribute to her lost band and tour manager, dedicating her next album, For My Broken Heart, to their memory. Currently, McEntire is on her Live in Concert Tour, with performances scheduled through April 15.
