The Oak Ridge Boys' farewell tour will no longer include Joe Bonsall. The 75-year-old says he won't take the stage with his bandmates in 2024 (and beyond). A replacement for Bonsall named Ben James was introduced last week, marking a significant transition for the beloved band.
The Oak Ridge Boys announced the American Made: Farewell Tour in September 2023. This tour is a celebration of their 50-year career in the music industry, but it also comes with a poignant note that they will be playing far fewer dates each year moving forward. Bonsall shared with Billboard, "My legs aren't what they used to be," highlighting the physical challenges he has faced.
What Happened to Joe Bonsall?
Bonsall's decision to retire from the road seems sudden, but it appears to have been inevitable. He has been battling a slow onset of a neuromuscular disorder that has made walking impossible. In an emotional statement to People, he said, "So I have basically retired from the road."
Despite these challenges, the Oak Ridge Boys have continued to perform. Over the last half-decade, the group has faced several medical emergencies, including Bonsall's brush with death in 2022 when doctors discovered pulmonary embolisms. He tweeted at the time, "I could have easily died last weekend, but God is not through with me yet."
Health Challenges and Resilience
In addition to his neuromuscular disorder, Bonsall has struggled with a genetic condition known as Dupuytren’s disease. This condition causes a thickening and tightening of tissue under the skin in the hand, which affected his ability to perform. He underwent surgery in 2017 to regain functionality in his hand.
Bonsall reflected on his 50 years with the band, saying, "I will never forget," expressing gratitude to fans who have supported him through prayer. His journey with the Oak Ridge Boys has been filled with highs and lows, but his commitment to the group has never wavered.
Who Will Replace Joe Bonsall?
Ben James, a 27-year-old singer, has been announced as Bonsall's replacement. He was first introduced to the band during a 2022 show in West Virginia, where he had the chance to sing Bonsall's part. James is a lifelong fan of the Oak Ridge Boys, and he recalls that "Elvira" was often played in his home as a child.
This year marks 51 years since the Oak Ridge Boys began their journey, featuring a lineup that includes Bonsall, Duane Allen, William Lee Golden, and Richard Sterban. The group has achieved remarkable success, with 17 No. 1 hits, including classics like "Leaving Louisiana in the Broad Daylight," "Trying to Love Two Women," and "Elvira."
Looking Forward
As the band embarks on their American Made: Farewell Tour, there are about 20 concerts scheduled for 2024. They have indicated that they will be performing 50 to 60 shows each year moving forward, which is about half of what they used to do. This adjustment reflects their commitment to continue sharing their music while accommodating the individual needs of the band members.
