John Deere — the largest agricultural machinery company in the world — is shrinking. On January 3, 2025, the company will lay off nearly 300 employees from their facilities in Iowa due to decreased demand for farm equipment. This decision reflects a troubling trend in the agricultural sector, where sales have been declining dramatically.
As the agricultural industry faces significant challenges, John Deere's decision to reduce its workforce highlights the broader economic issues that farmers and agricultural businesses are enduring. The layoffs will affect three different facilities: two in Illinois and one in Iowa, illustrating the widespread impact of these economic shifts.
Furthermore, the company is legally required to report mass layoffs, although it does not disclose the names of the affected employees. Specifically, the layoffs will involve 200 employees at John Deere Harvester Works in East Moline, Illinois, 80 production workers at John Deere Davenport Works in Davenport, Iowa, and 7 employees at John Deere Seeding and Cylinder operations in Moline, Illinois.
According to John Deere, the average price of corn has dropped by 37 percent from 2022, while soybean prices have plummeted by 24 percent and wheat prices have fallen by 35 percent. Such significant reductions in crop prices directly contribute to the decreased demand for agricultural machinery, leading to these tough decisions.
These developments present a real issue in America that is not expected to stop anytime soon. A downturn in sales ultimately affects hard-working individuals more than the corporations themselves. As the saying goes, "s--t rolls downhill," meaning the burden often falls on employees who are simply trying to provide for their families.
John Deere has already experienced mass layoffs in recent times, with over 2,600 employees let go across multiple states and factories. This latest reduction will only increase that number as the company navigates its way through an uncertain economic landscape.
