Alabama, one of the most iconic groups in country music history, will appear on television a man down Thursday night (Aug. 15). The event, titled CMT Giants: Alabama, is an all-star tribute to the legendary group that includes heartfelt performances from Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry. The show aims to honor the musical achievements and lasting impact of Alabama, especially in the wake of the loss of their beloved member, Jeff Cook.
Jeff Cook passed away in November 2022 after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease. Though he had retired from the group several years earlier, his absence still felt like a significant loss for the remaining members and their devoted fans. Teddy Gentry poignantly remarked, "It's like your right arm being gone," highlighting the deep emotional void left in the wake of Cook's passing.
The CMT Giants series has been celebrating the best in country music since 2006, showcasing talented artists who have contributed to the genre's rich history. Notable performers like Vince Gill, Charley Pride, Kenny Rogers, and Alan Jackson have graced its stage, and now Alabama is in the spotlight. The tribute was filmed at Belmont University’s Fisher Center for the Performing Arts in Nashville, promising a spectacular showcase of Alabama's enduring legacy.
As fans eagerly await the show, they can expect the group to close with their beloved hits "Mountain Music" and "My Home's in Alabama." The lineup will feature a star-studded cast, including Blake Shelton, Jason Aldean, Little Big Town, Luke Bryan, Old Dominion, Sam Hunt, and Jamey Johnson, who will pay homage to the Country Music Hall of Fame members.
While the tribute will undoubtedly be a celebration, Gentry acknowledges the bittersweet nature of the event, stating that there is a palpable hole on the stage where Cook once stood. "But we’re doing what Jeff wanted to do," he shares, emphasizing that the music must go on, even in the face of such a profound loss. The emotional connection remains strong, as they strive to honor their late bandmate's wishes while cherishing the memories they created together.
CMT Giants: Alabama was filmed in January and is set to air on CMT at 7 PM CT.
